Education Vacation: Resorts That Teach

Education Vacation: Resorts That Teach

Ski resorts are answering the need for education while vacationing. Some top examples of great resorts for educational ski vacations include:

  • Smugglers' Notch, Vt. Naturally, the trailblazer in family skiing is on top of education. At Smuggs, kids who go to ski school also attend the Winter Education Program. They study meteorology at a working weather station at the top of the mountain. They learn about snowmaking. They ski nature trails through the forest and attend the Winter Wizard science show. If that's not enough, the resort offers Study Hall each afternoon, with computers and qualified tutors, so kids can work on the homework they were assigned to do while on vacation.

  • Vail Resorts, Colo. All four Vail-owned ski areas (Beaver Creek, Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail) offer "Ske-Cology," an inclusive part of every ski school and snowboard program. Instructors pause at special teaching stations on the mountain, where children learn about the area's animals, trees, habitat, weather, etc. A side suggestion for a Vail-area visit: Read up on the 10th Mountain Division beforehand, and explore its home turf while there. It makes for a great history report.
