Tucked in the mountains of south-central West Virginia, Snowshoe Mountain Resort offers world-class whitewater, 125 miles of mountain bike trails and championship golf. But that's not all you'll find at this four-season, high-country playground. This summer, the biggest highlight at Snowshoe is the new Outdoor Adventure Program, which allows visitors to try their luck at everything from skeet shooting and fly-fishing to learning an Eskimo roll in a kayak. The program's summer calendar is jam-packed with classes, workshops and week-long camps for all ages. Learn oak strip basket weaving from local area artists or how to track and photograph native wildlife. Visitors to the area will find hard and soft outings, such as scenic rides on the Ballhooter chairlift and heart-thumping river rafting trips with Appalachian Wildwaters (800-624-8060). Hiking enthusiasts willing to dive into the wild can take a weekend camping trip to the Sunrise Backcountry Hut (304-572-5477). Golfers can play 18 on The Hawthorne Valley golf course from mid-April through mid-November (304-572-6500). And be sure to also check out the line-up for athletic and cultural events. Two of the best are the 24 Hours of Snowshoe mountain bike relay (June 10-11) and the Snowshoe Symphony Festival (Aug. 25-27).
