Summer Resorts 2000¿Far West, Whistler/Blackcomb, B.C.

The ski resort that's been rated No. 1 in North America by SKI readers for three out of the past five years doesn't slow down for summer. Name your favorite outdoor pursuits and you can find them here: golfing, hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, tennis and even glacier skiing. But Whistler values more than a high pulse rate. Located in the spectacular Coast Mountains of British Columbia, this Canadian resort offers a service-oriented, Euro-sensibility to vacationing¿just 218 miles north of Seattle, Wash. Its pedestrian-only alpine village buzzes with festivals and street entertainment all summer and is dotted with enough open-air cafés to keep Fellini smiling.

Four championship golf courses have transformed Whistler into a golf haven. Off the greens, hikers and bikers ride the gondola to the Whistler summit and later enjoy lunch at the Roundhouse Lodge. River rats can get soaked whitewater rafting (Whistler River Adventures, 888-932-3532), or rise above the fray heli-hiking (Blackcomb Helicopters, 800-330-4354). Whistler is a resort that doesn't store its skis for the summer: The Horstman Glacier, a remnant from the Ice Age, hosts dozens of ski camps and the general public from June 12 to Aug. 7.

With a base elevation of 2,214 feet, the moderate weather that can melt ski vacations is picture perfect for summer visitors. And with an exchange rate that stretches your U.S. dollar by 50 percent, the question is, what's been keeping you away?

  • Click into your skis to carve up Blackcomb's Horstman Glacier in the morning, then golf on one of the resort's world-class courses.
  • The Whistler Golf Packages includes three nights' lodging and two rounds of golf on the Whistler Golf Course for $239 per person. Call (800) 944-7853, or visit http://www. ">
