Downhill Training #2: 4 U.S. Men in Top 15

February 10, 2006

SESTRIERE, Italy (USST Press Release)—Four U.S. skiers placed in the top 15 Friday in the second of three Olympic downhill training runs on the Kandahar Banchetta course in Sestriere.

Bode Miller (Bretton Woods, NH), who was 16th in Thursday's first practice, had the best run among five U.S. skiers Friday as he recorded a time of 1:50.72 to finish seventh.

Spots 11, 12 and 13 were filled by Steven Nyman (Orem, UT), who posted a 1:50.88, Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA), who clocked in at 1:51.12 and Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA), who was just behind Sullivan with a time of 1:51.15.

Nyman, competing in his first Olympics, earned the third of four U.S. spots for Sunday's downhill. The final slot will be filled by either Macartney or Sullivan, depending on who has the best time in Saturday's last training run.

Ted Ligety (Park City, UT) finished 47th in 1:53.97.

Austrians went 1-2 with Klaus Kroell laying down the day's fastest time at 1:49.75. He was followed by Fritz Strobl in 1:50.11 and Switzerland's Bruno Kernen in 1:50.13.

Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA), the winner of Thursday's practice run by 1.21 seconds, chose not to ski Friday in order to rest for Saturday.

Saturday's third and final training run is scheduled for a noon start, as is Sunday's Olympic Downhill.
