Austrians Blanked in World Juniors SL

Verbier, Switzerland, Feb. 12, 2001--It took four days, but they finally held an event at the World Junior Alpine Championshipswhere an Austrian did not win the gold medal. In fact, a German and two Italians saw to it an Austrian didn't make thepodium in slalom.

Stefan Kogler of Germany won the slalom title with a two-run time of 1:25.72. Silver medalist was Roman Groebner ofItaly in 1:26.19 and the bronze medal went to another Italian, Cristian Deville, who was third in 1:26.37

Top American Friday was Jake Zamansky (Carbondale, CO; Aspen Ski Club), who finished 13th in 1:28.16. Jeffrey Harrison(Steilacoom, WA; White Pass Racing Association) was 32nd with Josh Whitham (Tahoe City; Squaw Valley Ski Team) 34thand TJ Lanning (Park City, UT; Park City Ski Team) 47th. David Lamb (Steamboat Springs, CO; Steamboat Springs WinterSports Club) failed to finish the first run.

It was the first race of the week - after the men's DH, super G and giant slalom plus the women's downhill and SG - whichan Austrian skier didn't win. The championships conclude on the weekend with the women's slalom and GS.
