National Safety Week at Squaw Valley USA (Jan 19-25)

posted: 01/17/2008

Squaw Valley USA- January 10, 2008 - Squaw Valley USA 'takes to the slopes' to participate in National Safety Awareness Week, January 19-25, 2008. This annual week is designed to heighten slope safety awareness and showcase what resorts regularly do with regard to skier and snowboarder safety and education. Safety Week events include the annual 'Steep & Deep' avalanche awareness clinic, daily introductions to the Recco avalanche rescue system, photo sessions with the Squaw avalanche rescue dogs, the chance to meet and talk safety with members of Squaw Valley Ski Patrol, and much more.

Friday, January 18 at 7 pm, Squaw Valley Ski Patrol hosts the annual Steep N Deep Avalanche Awareness Clinic at the Plaza Bar. This FREE/all-ages avalanche awareness clinic includes multi-media presentations by local guides, extreme skiers, weather forecasters, terrain analysts, and more. This clinic is more than just informative, for many hardcore skiers and snowboarders, it is necessary.

"Steep N Deep is not just for the hard core. It's for anyone who spends time on the snow, says Lel Tone, 13 year veteran of Squaw Valley Ski Patrol. "You'll walk away from this avalanche clinic with a heightened sense of awareness and knowledge that could save your life.

Ongoing safety programs in place at Squaw Valley USA include free avalanche beacon classes hosted by the Squaw Valley Ski Patrol on the 1st and the 15th of every month, safety education talks with local area schools, Responsibility Code postings throughout the resort, an active avalanche/search and rescue dog program, periodic helmet demo days and an active and always visible presence of Patrollers on the mountain to help educate and assist guests and to promote a safe mountain experience for all Squaw Valley skiers and riders.

National Safety Awareness Week is endorsed by the National Ski Area's Association. For more information on National Safety Week, Steep N Deep, and FREE Avalanche Transceiver Workshops (twice a month throughout the season) at Squaw Valley USA call 530-583-6985, or visit target=_blank> .
