Park City, UT August 10--Past U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team athletes who once gained fame for on-snow performances now have an opportunity to be recognized for personal contributions to their communities with the introduction of the new Texaco Star Award.
The award is a collaboration between the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and Olympic sponsor Texaco. The first winner will be announced at the America's Opening in Park City, Utah in November.
The Texaco Star Award has been created to reward U.S. Ski and Snowboard alumni for their hard work and dedication off the slopes in the area of community service through volunteerism, leadership development in the non-profit sector, mentoring, and community outreach programs.
The winner of the Texaco Star Award will receive $10,000 for a non-profit charity of their choice. Additionally, the benefiting charity will be invited to attend the Texaco Star Award presentation in Park City.
The Texaco Star Award winner will be chosen annually from six regional finalists who have employed the same passion, dedication and energy that they used to become world class athletes to make their communities better places to live. Regional finalists will be announced at USSA's Ski & Snowboard Balls across the U.S. and will receive a $1,000 check for the non-profit charity of their choice.
"Texaco's sponsorship of the U.S. Ski Team and our new Texaco Star Award demonstrates our belief in the talent and drive it takes to make the impossible, possible," said Polly Rua, Manager of Sponsorships. "Texaco knows that the fuel for success is to achieve the Olympic ideals of vision, focus, commitment, persistence and discipline. And these same values must guide us in our business and social lives. Application of the Olympic ideals to our own community activities would make everyone's individual 'world' a much better place to live."
"We're proud to partner with Texaco on the new Texaco Star Award," said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt, himself a former Olympic ski racer. "While our primary mission is athletic excellence, we cannot forget the important role all of our athletes play as role models to youth and within their communities. They represent a benchmark for our future as a sport and as a society."
Recipients must have been a member of the U.S. Ski or Snowboard Team. Nominations will be received from USSA alumni, staff, coaches, volunteers, as well as the media. They should contain the name and athletic background of the nominee, along with a short description of their contribution towards community service through volunteerism, leadership development in the non-profit sector, mentoring, and community outreach programs. Nominations must be received by August 15 and should be sent to: Texaco Star Award, USSA, Box 100, Park City, UT 84060.
Texaco is a proud sponsor of the 2000, 2002, and 2004 U.S. Olympic Teams and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. USSA is one of eight winter national governing bodies, representing 30,000 ski and snowboard athletes, coaches and officials, as well as 14 different national teams.
