Colorado Springs, Colo. Feb. 7 (USSA)--U.S. Ski Team member Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) has been named the U.S. OlympicCommittee's (USOC) Athlete of the Month for his outstanding performances in January.
During the month of January, Rahlves took a liking to skiing in Austria as he won the gold medal in super G at the FIS WorldChampionships in St. Anton on January 30. It was the first World Championships gold medal by a U.S. man since Steve Mahre won thegiant slalom in 1982. It was also the first World Championships super G medal ever won by an American man or women.
Just before the World Championships, Rahlves also posted a solid outing in Kitzbuehel, Austria. He tied for third Jan. 20 in the 61stHahnenkamm downhill, considered one of the toughest stops on the World Cup tour. It was just the fourth podium finish ever earnedby an American skier at the Hahnenkamm downhill. A day earlier, Rahlves was fourth, the top American finisher, in the super G atKitzbuehel.
Tennis star Jennifer Capriati was named the USOC Female Athlete of the Month, while the U.S. National Men's Under-17 Ice HockeyTeam was tabbed the USOC Team of the Month for January.
