60th Birthday Brings Sugar Bowl Upgrades

60th Birthday Brings Sugar Bowl Upgrades

posted: 01/01/2000

Norden, CA August 5--It's celebration time at Sugar Bowl Ski Area in California. The 1999-2000 ski season marks their 60th year of operation and they are getting busy.

Recent improvements started at the end of May with the construction of two new chairlifts, six new trails, and an increase in snowmaking capability.

"We've been working on the expansion for the past couple of years," said Carol White, of Sugar Bowl Resort. "Since finishing some of the main projects last season, we've seen an increase in skier visits to almost 300,000. We also had the largest market share increase in the state with paid attendance up more than 10 percent and revenues up 18 percent."

Topping this summer's list of improvements is a new high-speed quad on Mt. Disney. The lift will load directly in front of the Village Lodge and unload at Mt. Disney's true summit--improving access to the mountain. This project is slated to be complete by the end of October--just in time for the new season.

"We expect that when the expansion is finished, we'll continue an increase in skier visits," White added.

In addition to the upgrades, the resort is planning plenty of festive celebrations to commemorate their anniversary, but the details have not yet been finalized.

Sugar Bowl's overarching goal is to upgrade the lifts and the mountain while still preserving their classic, old-school ambiance.
