Park City, Utah: Rank 9 West, 1998

If the hassle of winter travel has kept you from a ski vacation, Park City is the clear solution. With the Salt Lake City airport just down the road, the resort ranks No. 3 nationally for access. It's "easy to get to, has good on-slope lodging, good restaurants and friendly people," a reader says. What more could you ask for? "Terrain, especially expert terrain," one reader suggests. Park City is answering that with two developments: A new lift in McConkey's Bowl provides easier access to expert terrain and the opening of the formerly out-of-bounds Pine Cone Ridge. This pumps Park City's terrain to more than 3,000 acres. The "generally awkward lift system" was vastly improved last season with two high-speed six-packs from base to summit. To get a sense of the resort's history, go on the mountain's mine tour. And when you're tired of skiing, turn to historic Main Street. Downtown keeps growing, helping Park City maintain its reputation for "great restaurants, great shopping, great après-ski," almost "like skiing Colorado in Utah," a reader says. From sushi to Southwest, breweries to bagels, you'll find your fare. Once you arrive, abandon your car, "bus service is excellent."
