VIENNA, Austria Nov. 19, 2003 (AP)--Hermann Maier competed in the season-opening World Cup last month with a broken rib and the injury probably will bother the Austrian ski star for a few more weeks.

"Time is the only healer," spokesman Knut Okresek said.

Maier told Austrian state broadcaster ORF he hit a gate during training, but did not discuss the injury because it would have sounded like an excuse. He said he never hesitated about starting in Soelden because "I know I have to take every chance."

Despite the ailing rib and an inflamed right knee, Maier placed 16th in the giant slalom. Okresek said Maier was practicing in Beaver Creek, Colo., where World Cup races will be held Dec. 6-7.

Maier missed almost two seasons after a 2001 motorcycle accident that nearly cost him a leg. He competed in a handful of races late last season and won a super giant slalom in January.
