Maier Crashes During Training

February 4, 2005

BORMIO, Italy (AP)--Hermann Maier crashed during a training run but is expected to race in Saturday's downhill at the world championships.

The Austrian star fell Friday coming off the massive San Pietro jump and landed badly, losing control and tumbling down the hill. His left leg was treated and he was taken down the slope on a sled. The team doctor stitched a 2-inch cut on his shin.

Maier, a former Olympic champion in the giant slalom and super giant slalom, finished fourth in last Saturday's super-G.

He missed the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City after breaking his right leg in a motorcycle crash. He returned in the 2003 season and won his fourth World Cup overall title last year.

Olympic downhill champion Fritz Strobl led a 1-2-3 Austrian finish. He covered the Stelvio course in 1 minute, 56.11 seconds, followed by Werner Franz and Christoph Gruber.

Overall World Cup leader Bode Miller was 29th and will start second Saturday. The final training session before a downhill determines the starting order, with the top 30 finishers starting in reverse order.
