Rahlves Wins Kitzbuehel Super G

Kitzbuehel, Austria Jan. 23, 2003 (AP)--Daron Rahlves of the United States captured a World Cup super giant slalom Friday, edging Hermann Maier by 0.03 seconds and upstaging the Austrian on a course where he is used to winning.

Rahlves, third in Thursday's downhill, completed the steep and treacherous Hahnenkamm slope Streif course in 1 minute, 23.08 seconds. Michael Walchhofer of Austria was third in 1:23.47.

Maier won the three previous times he raced the super-G in Kitzbuehel. Last year, he produced a stunning victory in the super-G, his first win after an 18-month absence because of a motorcycle accident that nearly cost him a leg.

Rahlves has always enjoyed success in Kitzbuehel. On Saturday, he will try to repeat last year's victory in the downhill, considered the most prestigious on the World Cup circuit. This time, Rahlves hopes to win on a full-length course. Last year's downhill was shortened because of bad weather.
