Boulder, CO, Dec. 6--The Rockies second big storm of the season blessed the snow-thirsty mountains with two-days of fresh powder. The snowstorm pushed its way from Southern California into Utah last Thursday and slowly moved into Colorado and New Mexico over the weekend leaving over a foot of new snow for skiers to enjoy.
The brunt of the snowstorm hit Utah and then visited New Mexico and Colorado before dissipating. Brian Head Resort, UT reported 14-inches; one-foot of new snow fell on Brighton Ski Resort, UT; two-feet fell on Snowbird, UT; Solitude, UT got 10-inches; eight-inches of powder blanketed the Canyons, UT.
Snow blew over Taos Ski Valley, NM from Friday morning to Saturday morning, leaving eight-inches of new snow for the area's third significant snowfall of the season. "It's always great to have natural snow, and this should make for a great opening day on Dec. 16," said J.P. Rael, Taos marketing manager.
The same storm hit Angel Fire Resort, NM leaving 18-inches of powder. "This is the biggest storm we've had so far," said Kelley Davidson, Angel Fire director of marketing. The area will open for the weekend of Dec. 11-12, and then reopen for the season on Dec. 16.
Ski Santa Fe, NM also saw one-foot of new snow.
Some Colorado ski areas shared a similar fate this weekend, receiving close to a foot of new snow. The season may be getting off to a slow start, but the snow is finally beginning to pile up.
