How We Test Ski Boots

How We Test Ski Boots

Jamie Kingsbury tests boots for SKI Magazine at Stratton, Vt.

To get the best ski gear, start at the bottom and work up.

To test boots, we returned to Mt. Bachelor, Ore., in the spring, as we have most years since SKI magazine created the first on-hill boot testing program more than 25 years ago.

Masters ski racers at Mt. Hood
Masters Racers
Can a lifelong skidder take a crash course in carving, then crush the competition on the masters racing circuit? Of course not. But the suits are cute.

The most ravishing beauty at the Summer Fun Nationals ski race is a 43-year-old looker named Kat, who used to skate in the Ice Capades.

In a close second behind Kat are Jill and Jane, best friends since youth, both resplendent in hot-pink speed suits.

Mt. Bachelor Welcomes Summer with Skiing

Mt. Bachelor Best Summer Skiing 2012
Bachelor Summer 2012
Make off-season turns June 29-July 1.

Instead of kicking off its summer season with mountain biking or a golf course opening like most ski resorts, Mt. Bachelor suggests waxing your boards.

From June 29 through July 1, the resort is firing up the Summit Express Chair for intermediate to advance skiing. For only $30 you can play in the snow from 7:30 am to 1 pm before kicking back at the Pine Marten lodge for an on-mountain BBQ and live music. If you do the math, that’s 16.5 hours of skiing over three days for $90. That’s about what a one-day pass costs at most western resorts. Still need more reasons to go?
