Beaver Creek

Is Beaver Creek for real? Free parking, quaint Bavarian village, escalators that make the typically chaotic, booted schlep to the chairlifts nearly effortless. A ski valet at your hotel who, after helping you into your heated boots, carries your skis to the chair. Swift, well-placed lifts that, in a brisk 15 minutes, deposit your mixed-ability brood at the summit, where you're comfortable sending the kids off to explore Powell, Mystic Maze and Jack Rabbit Alley while you fry your quads on Golden Eagle, the country’s only FIS downhill course. Or the single lift ride required to rendezvous for lunch, followed by an afternoon lapping the all-levels-friendly Strawberry Park and Upper Beaver Creek lifts. It’s real. All of it. Right down to the warm chocolate-chip cookies at day’s end. The price tag? Unfortunately, that’s real as well. —D.W.

What’s New » The Rose Bowl triple was replaced with a high-speed quad that cuts the 10-minute ride in half, spelling quicker access to Stone Creek Chutes.

On-Hill Lunch » Settle into an outdoor table at Red Tail Camp for barbecue and live music during Deck Days, every Sunday from late February to early April.

Don’t Miss » Create your own clinic. New this season, ski school will offer custom coaching to groups of four, max. Your wish (bumps, steeps, trees) is your instructor’s command.

Gore-Tex TransRockies Run

Stage 6 of the TransRockies Run
Teams making their way through stage 6 of the Gore-Tex TransRockies Run.
This version of couple’s therapy isn’t for the faint of heart—or feet.

No one ever said love is easy. It’s all about teamwork, communication and compromise. So perhaps the best way to build a lasting relationship is to push it to the brink. Funny...that's also a great way to get in shape for ski season. Enter the Gore-Tex TransRockies race, a six-day, 120-mile team trail run that starts in Buena Vista, Colo., and ends in Beaver Creek. Inspired by the TransAlpine race—an eight-day event that takes pairs of runners from Germany to Italy—TransRockies isn’t for the faint of heart or weak of feet.

Live like a President in Beaver Creek

Live like a President in Beaver Creek
President Ford's Governor's Lodge, Beaver Creek
Gerard Ford was the longest living president. Maybe his sweet Beaver Creek mountain home helped. Now you can sleep there, too.

President Gerald Ford lived to the ripe age of 93, longer than any other president. Ford was an avid skier, so we like to think that his time on the slopes had a hand in his longevity. Or maybe it was just hanging out après in Governor’s Lodge, Ford’s palatial slopeside Beaver Creek home. You can be the judge, as Ford’s luxury chalet is now available for short-term rental.

Lindsey Vonn Wins—Again—at Birds of Prey

Lindsey Vonn Wins—Again—at Birds of Prey
Lindsey Vonn "Tebowing" at Birds of Prey
Lindsey Vonn wins another World Cup race, this time at Beaver Creek.

Lindsey Vonn is starting to annoy us just a little, making our beloved sport of skiing look so darn easy just about everytime she slides into the start gate. With her super-G victory yesterday at her adopted hometown of Beaver Creek, Vonn has now won her fourth consecutive World Cup race—becoming the first American racer to pull that off. But we love Lindsey (how can you not?), as do the local Vail Valley school kids. A lot of them skipped school to watch the race. We’re guessing they didn’t get in much trouble.
