Copper Mountain

+Excellent trail layout. Free snowcat in the bowls.
- Snoozy village. Have to hit Frisco for a good meal.

Copper Mountain may surprise you. Nestl ed between behemoths Vail and Breckenridge, it’s equal parts local hangout and destination resort. Luxury ski-in, ski-out four- and five-bedroom homes with gourmet kitchens and stone fireplaces at Lewis Ranch offer a high-end lodging option previously missing at Copper, and on-mountain upgrades have focused on the skiing itself rather than the base area (and as skiers, we like that). Case in point: The sluggish Highpoint double was replaced with a high-speed quad, giving park-andpipers easier access to the Catalyst park while ensuring that beginners spend more time learning and less time on the lift. Four back bowls, pristine tree skiing and the free snowcatserved Tucker Mountain will keep experts going for days. “A great overall mountain with something for everyone,” says one reader. We’re not surprised. —Sally Francklyn

Must Ski » Ride the Alpine lift to marathon bump runs. After a big storm, lap it all day—you’ll ski powder in the morning and perfect soft bumps post-lunch.

Family Activity » The One Hit Wonder ($60) at Woodward at Copper is a skills and safety clinic held at the premier training grounds for budding jibbers.

Off-Hill Restaurant » Try the Blue Spruce in Frisco for a steak and a glass of wine. The bar in the back room often features live music and drink specials.

Top Five Runs at Copper Mountain

Here are the Top Five runs at Copper Mountain, from cruisers to steeps.

Best Cruiser: Andy’s Encore. For your first run, Andy’s Encore is a top to bottom groomer that will get you warmed up. A few steep pitches keep it challenging. The speedy six-pack Super Bee will buzz you to the top in 11 minutes.  On an icy morning, though, stay away from the frontside.

Copper Mountain Spa and Athletic Club

Copper Mountain Spa and Athletic Club

Enjoy the athletic facilities after a relaxing facial.

Try a MyChelle facial or a relaxing massage at the Copper Mountain Athletic Club. Facials are designed with the high altitude and the stress of the climate in mind. Massages are a combination of many techniques including Swedish relaxation, neuromuscular, sports, pregnancy and deep tissue. Also, on your day of treatment, you are free to use of the pool, weight room, cardio equipment, spas, steam rooms and racquetball court. The 25-yard, four-lane pool always has at least two lanes open for family and recreational swimming, which is a perfect way to keep your kids entertained.

Tuckers Tavern

Tuckers Tavern

For a killer lunch deal or an après -ski brew, head to Tuckers.

The best lunch deal is at Tuckers Tavern, located deep in Center Village. Where else can you get two slices of pizza and a Paulaner beer for $5? Sit on the patio and sip an Oktoberfest. (970) 968-2033

The Cirque

The Cirque’s crowning amenity—ask any 10-year-old— is the heated outdoor pool with rock waterfall and hot tubs.

The 37-unit Cirque dominates Copper’s Union Creek base, where ski school and the beginner terrain are located, making it great for families wrangling kids onto the slopes. Heated underground parking; balconies in every unit and high-end finishes, such as local stone trims, set the Cirque apart, as well as details such as wine refrigerators and jetted tubs in some units. Common areas include a media room with a 52-inch flatscreen TV and a small fitness center. But the Cirque’s crowning amenity—ask any 10-year-old— is the heated outdoor pool with rock waterfall and hot tubs.

Lewis Ranch

Lewis Ranch

Luxury amenities and slope-side convenience.

These four bedroom townhouses raise the standard for luxury at Copper. Ski-in/ski-out to the Lumberjack chair at the Union Creek base, the Swiss Craftsman-style units have gourmet kitchens with soap-stone counters and Viking appliances (plus a picture window that peers out over Copper’s Soliloquy run), sealed-combustion fireplaces in the living areas, wide-plank walnut floors and an elevator form the garage to the master suite on the fourth floor. After all, how else would you get to the rooftop hot tub?

Copper Mountain, Colorado, recently hosted the Red Bull 1976 Games, in memory of when Denver was awarded the 1976 Olympic bid, but then activists and politicians campaigned against it and the Games moved to Innsbruck, Austria. Retro skiers dressed in bell bottoms and stretch pants competed in a snowbladecross and an old school air contest, throwing daffys, backscratchers, and the first-ever double-tandem-big-air jump. Here's a video flashback to 1976.
