Copper Mountain

+Excellent trail layout. Free snowcat in the bowls.
- Snoozy village. Have to hit Frisco for a good meal.

Copper Mountain may surprise you. Nestl ed between behemoths Vail and Breckenridge, it’s equal parts local hangout and destination resort. Luxury ski-in, ski-out four- and five-bedroom homes with gourmet kitchens and stone fireplaces at Lewis Ranch offer a high-end lodging option previously missing at Copper, and on-mountain upgrades have focused on the skiing itself rather than the base area (and as skiers, we like that). Case in point: The sluggish Highpoint double was replaced with a high-speed quad, giving park-andpipers easier access to the Catalyst park while ensuring that beginners spend more time learning and less time on the lift. Four back bowls, pristine tree skiing and the free snowcatserved Tucker Mountain will keep experts going for days. “A great overall mountain with something for everyone,” says one reader. We’re not surprised. —Sally Francklyn

Must Ski » Ride the Alpine lift to marathon bump runs. After a big storm, lap it all day—you’ll ski powder in the morning and perfect soft bumps post-lunch.

Family Activity » The One Hit Wonder ($60) at Woodward at Copper is a skills and safety clinic held at the premier training grounds for budding jibbers.

Off-Hill Restaurant » Try the Blue Spruce in Frisco for a steak and a glass of wine. The bar in the back room often features live music and drink specials.

After Colorado tried and failed to get a foothold in Utah, looks like Utah tried to get a foothold in Colorado -- and succeeded. Colorado's Vail Resorts attempted purchase of The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah, a few months back was a bust.

Winter Park Ski School Kids With Helmets
Steamboat, Copper, Winter Park to require helmets for the under-17 set in terrain parks, ski school

Who doesn't have a helmets-saved-my-life story? A friend of SKI Magazine likes to tell the story of how a helmet saved her, not from a cliff-jump gone wrong or an underdone backflip 540, but from being a klutz. Our friend had just popped off the lift at a local Colorado resort when she slipped sideways and fell to the ground. The chair behind her swept up and conked her right on the back of the head and knocked her darn near unconscious. Had she not been wearing a helmet, she says, a concussion -- or worse -- was inevitable.

We all ride them, but which are the tops in views, speed, vert and elevation? Here's one list. Do you agree?

All chairlifts are not created equal. Some fly you to the summit before you've had a chance to rest your burning quads. Others reveal such epic views you wouldn't care if you ever got to the top. A few have some serious historical cred—you feel part of an exclusive club just riding on them. Chairlifts may be the mechanics that make our turns possible, but they're also a crucial part of the ski experience. Can they be rated, quantified? Good question.

"Challenging refinancing issues" could lead to resort's sale

The Summit Daily News is reporting that Colorado's Copper Mountain ski resort may be up for sale, though the story offered little more than local scuttlebutt. The resort, for its part, isn't confirming or denying anything other than that last year's financial storm was a tough one. “It's no secret. We're going through challenging refinancing issues.
