Girdwood, Alaska December 15, 2003--The snow continues to fall in the Girdwood valley and the upper elevations of Mt. Alyeska have enjoyed over 66 inches of snow in the last seven days and over 119 inches since November. The recent snow storm puts Alyeska Resort on top of the snow charts. In February 2003, Alyeska Resort previously topped the chart with a 48-hour accumulation of 42 inches.

The recent snowfall brings Alyeska Resort closer to opening additional terrain. Currently, skiing and snowboarding is limited to the lower mountain serviced by Chairs 3 and 4 with Chair 7 operating on weekends.

"We have the snow we need to open the upper mountain," said Larry Daniels, general manager for Alyeska Ski Area. "Once our snow safety crews analyze and secure the area our patrol crews will begin to prepare the terrain for the public. Terrain preparation generally takes three-to-five days to install boundary ropes and signs and for trails to be groomed."

Last Wednesday, Dec. 10, Alyeska reported 61 inches of snow at the top (2,750 feet above sea level), 60 inches at mid-mountain (1,500 feet), and 10 inches at the base (250 feet).

Skiers and snowboarders are encouraged to call the SKI-SNOW hotline (907-754-7669) for the most accurate lift, weather, and trail conditions. Detailed information about winter events, mountain operations, lift ticket prices, and current snow conditions are also available at www.alyeskaresort.com.
