Sustainable Slopes: Sugar Bowl Resort

News

(Colleen Dalton (530) 426-6724 cdalton@sugarbowl.com)
Sugar Bowl endorses NSAA's "Keep Winter Cool" campaign and is committed to environmental stewardship in resort operations from waste management to transportation, energy conservation and habitat protection. In its 64th year of operation, Sugar Bowl has long placed a high emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainable development by providing carpooling and shuttle-riding incentives, monitoring water quality, conducting on-hill slope stabilization projects, recycling paper, cardboard, beverage containers, vehicle fluids, and printer cartridges.

In September of 2003, Sugar Bowl was awarded the Waste Board's Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) by the California Integrated Waste Management Board. This achievement recognizes Sugar Bowl's milestones towards achieving the resort's long-term environmental goals. WRAP is designed to recognize companies that develop creative and aggressive programs to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. Applicants are honored based on a set of strict criteria developed in cooperation with the business community.

Sugar Bowl's goal is to raise the bar for resort environmental standards and to draw consumer attention to personal habits that prevent global warning and "Protect the Powder." On Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, Sugar Bowl will provide an information booth on the Judah Deck with highlights of resort environmental stewardship on display. In addition, "Environmental Spotters" will give raffle tickets to passengers in vehicles with four or more riders and to shuttle bus riders from 8AM-12:30PM. Guests caught recycling or picking up garbage will receive tickets. Tickets are also available for sale at $2 per ticket, proceeds go towards Sugar Bowl's recycling program. At 3:00PM, the raffle giveaway will include a pass for next season and items from Sugar Bowl's Summit Snowboard Shop and Ski & Sports.
