Need room to move? Make the 770,000-acre White Mountain National Forest your playground, and Waterville Valley your clubhouse. You'll need time to explore, and Waterville specializes in attractively priced weeklong stays with all the amenities included. There's tennis at the Tennis Club, golf at the Golf Club (nine holes, with one midweek round per day included in your package); and adventure at the Adventure Center (mountain bikes and more). You can splash down on Corcoran Pond, either in your swimsuit or in a canoe, kayak or paddleboat. Or lace up your hiking boots, pack a picnic and strike out into the woods. The resort is surrounded by an imposing foursome of 4,000-foot peaks: Osceola, Jennings, Noon and Tecumsah (where the ski slopes are). If tennis is your game, there are 18 clay courts, plus two more indoors at the Athletic Club, where there are racquetball courts, as well (and saunas and Jacuzzis for later). Rent a pair of inline skates and roll around town, or cast a fly into the Mad River. Your children will be glad to be rid of you, having enrolled in summer camps available through the Town Recreation Department (603-236-4695). Hop in the car and head out Tripoli Road, open in summer only, for the climb to the Osceola and Tecumsah trailheads. There are plenty of places to picnic in this loveliest of settings. At day's end, head back to town. One of Waterville's beauties is that you can get down and dirty by day, then clean up for elegant dining by night.
