SLOC Names New Names for Olympic Venues

Salt Lake City, UT Mar. 29 (AP)--Forget the Delta Center. During the 2002 Winter Games, Olympic organizers want it to be called the Salt Lake Ice Arena.

Even the Winter Sports Park near Park City will be renamed _ as the Utah Olympic Park.

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee on Tuesday gave its own names for Olympic venues.

The changes ``make it official that these are indeed Olympic facilities,'' said Shelley Thomas, a spokeswoman for the organizers.

The Oquirrh speedskating oval in Kearns, a Salt Lake City suburb. will be called the Utah Olympic Oval and the Salt Palace convention center will be the ``Main Media Center.''

Among places that won't swap names are the Alpine ski venues _ Deer Valley, Park City and Snowbasin. But the Rice-Eccles Stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held, will be known as the Olympic Stadium.
