Maryland's Wisp Resort Finds New Owner and Plan

McHenry, MD, Dec. 19, 2000--(SAM Magazine) A locally led investment and development group announced yesterday it expected to purchase Wisp Four Seasons Resort from founder Helmuth Heise in March or April.

The group, DC Development, has an option to buy the resort in a development deal that involves plans for a new lodge, tubing lanes and additional intermediate terrain at the 46-year-old resort's summit, effectively moving the resort's base of operations to the top. But that development is actually the smaller part of a project expected to encompass at least 550 acres adjacent to the 80-acre resort that will create an adventure sports center.

The resort sale is reportedly worth between $11 million and $12 million dollars and will hand ownership over to DC Development. The larger project will be a joint public-private undertaking between DC and Adventure Sports Center, a not-for-profit formed for the purpose of spearheading an international sports center for western Maryland.

Upon completion, the center is expected to accommodate 25 different sports from climbing to kayaking on a quarter-mile-long recirculating whitewater course and will include a field house, conference center and Olympic-sized ice rink among other amenities on donated land. The development is aimed at both attracting adventure tourism to the region and giving the Washington-Baltimore area a chance at winning its 2012 Summer Olympics bid.
