Adelboden, Switzerland Feb. 20--Slovenian Matjaz Vhrovnik - who hadconsidered quitting ski racing ayear ago because of so-so results - won the first World Cup race of hiscareer Sunday, out-battlingdeteriorating conditions to edge Kjetil-Andre Aamodt of Norway by .21with Schlopy posting theseventh-fastest second run to move into 16th place.

A day after rain and bad weather forced rescheduling the annual WorldCup giant slalom in Adelboden,Vhrovnik hung-up a two-run time of 1:42.10 with Aamodt runnerup in1:42.31. Third place went to AustrianMario Matt in 1:42.53. Aamodt remains No. 2 in the overall points - buta distant 346 points behind behindAustrian Hermann Maier, who doesn't race slalom - and No. 1 in slalompoints with three SLs remaining.

It was the best World Cup result of his career for Schlopy, who had a1:44.50 time. The sloppy conditionsforced nine DNFs on the second run, including Bode Miller (Franconia,NH).

There was no immediate word on rescheduling of Saturday's GS. The men'stour heads next to South Koreafor a GS and slalom Feb. 26-27 at Yongpyong before returning to the '94Olympic hill at Kvitfjell, Norway, fortwo DHs and a super G.
