Lalive 11th, Ludlow 14th as Gerg Wins Super G

VEYSONNAZ, Switzerland, Jan. 11, 2004 - Two-time World Cup super G champion Hilde Gerg of Germany, an Olympic slalom champion who no longer runs slalom because of knee injuries, collected the 17th World Cup victory of her career Sunday in a super G. Caroline Lalive was top American in 11th place with Libby Ludlow in 14th.

On an overcast day with temperatures in the mid-30s, Gerg covered the 1.94K course in 1:21.34 with Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria second at 1:21.58. Saturday, Gerg and Dorfmeister tied for second (behind Austrian Renate Goetschl) in a downhill in Veysonnaz.

Lalive's time in just the third super G of the season was 1:22.92 and Ludlow, who scored her first World Cup points of the season Saturday after an ankle injury on the eve of the season opener 10 weeks ago, came out of the No. 33 start to finish in 1:23.09. Kirsten Clark was 24th and Jonna Mendes tied for 27th.

"We have some positives to build on," said Women's Head Coach Patrick Riml. "We had some expectations after Saturday's downhill, but it wasn't to be. Still, it was another good race for Caroline, who's skiing so well after coming back from that knee injury at the end of last season...and here's Libby with a top-15 in super G, her second points race in a row.

"Clarky made a couple of small mistakes, but that's all it takes, and Jonna is a medalist in super G and she knows she can do better, but it's still good to have some points." He said Lindsey Kildow skied the top section of the course well "but then she leaned in on a gate and that was it."

The next World Cup stop for the women is Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, where they will race a super G Friday and then two DHs.
