posted: 01/01/2000

Chamonix, France Jan. 26, 2002 (AP)--A French guide and two Swiss clients were found dead Sunday after being buried in an avalanche near the Megeve ski station, police said.

The accident brings to five the number of people killed by avalanches in the French Alps over the weekend.

Authorities have not released the victims' identities.

An avalanche unleashed by a group of skiers killed one person and injured another in southeastern France on Saturday, authorities in Grenoble said.

Between six and eight skiers at the Sept-Laux station set off the avalanche after wandering off a designated slope, said Patrick Cousinard, an official from the Isere region.

On Friday, a skier died of injuries sustained after being engulfed in cascading snow near the Valmorel ski station in the Savoie region.
