David Currier Head Shot

Name: David Currier

Age: more than 30/less than 80

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 165

Home hill: Sun Valley

Day Job: GM Smith Ophthalmic Division

What makes you qualified to test?: Ski test experience as director/tester/writer; ski manufacturing background with Volant; passion for ski design, construction, tuning and performance

Skiing background: 9 years US Ski Team, 10 years Pro Racing, Olympian, US and Canadian National Champion.

Favorite type of terrain: Steep and deep, or firm groomers.

Ideal ski: All Mtn./Big Mtn. in the mid-80’s to 105 (unless it’s a pow day).

Favorite part of the Skiing mag ski test: Camaraderie with testers/staff/ski product managers/ski resort hosts, and the honor of testing the greatest quiver of perfectly prepared new skis.  Oh yeah, and the amount of chocolate I can eat when I’m burning 5,000 calories/day.

Funniest story from ski test (any year)?: 1) One of our esteemed former women’s test directors mistaking a gaper for one of the senior editors and yelling his name from the lift. 2) A younger tester and self-professed oenophile, but in an already vastly over-served state, advocating that moldy sneaker was a desirable principal note for a top Willamette Valley Pinot Noir at the Pines Lodge in Beaver Creek.  And then instructing the wait staff to top off the 25 or so glasses of non-corked wine at the table.

What don't people know about the ski test?: It needs its own reality show!

Why should people trust the Skiing mag ski test?: Sound methodology, articulate testers with sound technique who can convey the personality and salient attributes of ski to any given consumer. It’s not about an ordinal ranking America; it’s about finding the best ski(s) for you.

Please translate the following phrase: Hafmeyjunum ekki skíði, þú kjánalegt manneskja!:  The meringue core in this ski, makes me feel more manly.
