What's Cooking: Serving Up The Good LIfe

Fall Line
posted: 01/23/2001

Two years ago, the collective owners of the eclectic Mist Grill set up shop in a former 1807 grist mill in Waterbury, Vt., not far from Stowe. Their mission? To become the "living room" of the community. To that end, its friendly little bakery offers rustic pies, creative cakes and cookies, pretty pastries, artisan breads, coffee roasted on site and "highly recognized" (African Berry, Ginger Ginkgo Gotu Kola) teas. A comfortable café with butter-yellow concrete floors, original stone walls and a gleaming, bite-sized open kitchen is the place for "yogranola" sundaes, Mist griddle cakes and delicious broiled grapefruit with maple syrup in the a.m., and eggplant, tomato and provolone panini, cob-smoked BLTs, or selections from the charcuterie for lunch. Social food-and-wine pairing dinners, with themes like "Thai One On," "Mist Grill Français" and "Wild Wines with Wild Game" are held on occasion. A gallery shows a rotation of works by local artists. Good living-not to mention eating and socializing-indeed.
