Nova Scotia Mandates Ski Helmets

Nova Scotia recently passed legislation requiring skiers and boarders to wear helmets, despite the fact that a only a tiny fraction of the the Canadian province's citizens have suffered severe head injuries. Read more in the Toronto Standard.

I have worn a helmet for about a dozen years. When I fall at speed, I am very glad to have it on. I am a volunteer firefighter, and I have seen how effective helmets can be for motorcycle riders. All of that said, it is WRONG for government to legislate helmet use. You cannot outlaw stupidity. This is what happens with national health care. The rationalization is that medical costs will be higher. That's garbage. Behavior is a much bigger factor, and it is not government's job to control behavior.
