Bolton Valley is Building a Turbine

Bolton Valley Resort in Vermont announced last week that they’ve started construction on a wind turbine to help power their resort. The turbine, which is the second installed at a ski area in the U.S. is expected to produce 300,000 killowatts, enough to light up 40 houses, and should be up and running by the time the snow flies. “Adding wind power is asignificant investment but will yield tremendous returns for our ski area and Vermont,” said owner Larry Williams.

Jiminy Peak, in Massachusetts, has had a turbine (nicknamed Zephyr) since 2007. It produces about a third of the resort’s power and saves them almost $500,000 a year in energy costs.

Aspen Skiing Company is also looking at wind energy. They’ve set up a test tower on top of Snowmass to see if there is enough wind to power a turbine.   -Heather Hansman
