Colorado Backcountry Hut Burns Down
I came across this Vail Daily article while surfing mountainbuzz.com the other day. A well-known and well-used backcountry hut near Vail burned down sometime around a week and a half ago.The Fowler-Hilliard hut was part of Colorado's famed 10th Mountain Division hut system. It was built in 1988 with funding from nearly 300 donors and provided access to, as word has it, lots of fantastic glade skiing and some pretty nice views.
One mountainbuzz forum member said he'd "done a couple of excellent trips there," and that the hut "had one of the best floor plans and a ferrari of a wood stove in the middle of the kitchen." I've never been there myself—I've been meaning to get a hut trip together for years now—but I was bummed to read about the fire nonetheless. Apparently, a rebuilding effort is underway.
Have you stayed there and skied nearby? Let's hear about it.
