Jackson Kayaks 4Fun whitewater kayak
Most of my coworkers ride mountain bikes in the off-season. I meant to be a mountain biker, too, but I knocked up my wife five and a half years ago, before I had a chance to invest in a good bike. So I stick to a sport I got into as a kid, and for which I maintain a working arsenal of equipment: whitewater kayaking. My latest toy is a Jackson 4Fun from Confluence Kayaks in Denver (a store that also has a great backcountry-oriented ski shop during winter, but we’ll talk about that another time). It’s designed to function simultaneously as a playboat and a river runner, good for paddlers who want one do-it-all vessel.
It’s a capable front surfer—an important attribute for an old-schooler like me—but it’s loose enough to flatspin easily and cartwheel in powered-up features. I say “powerful” because at 190lbs., I’m a bit light to be able to sink the bow deeply enough to get near-vertical cartwheels. Had I wanted more of a playboat, I would have opted for the slightly smaller Fun. Ferrying and navigation are a cinch: the 4Fun has more hullspeed than a shorter playboat and the bow is rockered enough to keep it from purling.
I’m most impressed with the outfitting, though. I can adjust the backband with a cord-and-jam-cleat setup located above each thigh. The seat and feet outfitting consists of deflatable beanbags filled with Styrofoam beans. Move your ass and feet around until you’ve got a comfortable custom fit, and then suck the air out of both bladders to lock the beans into place and preserve the fit. There’s also an air chamber just ahead of the footbag. Pump it up to move the footbag toward you and tighten the fit; deflate it to move it away.
I’m sure mountain biking is fun, and maybe I’ll get into it when my kids are in college and I’m old enough to really hurt myself. In the meantime, there’s something cool about paddling water upon which I was only recently skiing. [$1,099; Jacksonkayak.com] —Sam Bass
