The Saucer Boy Contest
The new Matchstick Productions film, In Deep: The Skiing Experience, premiered Saturday night to two sold-out audiences at Colorado's Boulder Theater. The highlight of the film was surely the Shane McConkey tribute, which showcased the goofy spirit and big-mountain talent of the ski pioneer who died while shooting with MSP last April in Italy. Before the film, cinematographer Scott Gaffney introduced several of the athletes in attendance that night, then said, "There's one guy who's not able to be here tonight." Before even saying Shane's name, the entire theater erupted in a standing ovation. "You're going to make me cry," Gaffney said.
To pay special tribute to Shane, they also hosted a Saucer Boy costume contest, awarding the winner a pair of limited-edition K2 PBR skis and custom Oakley goggles. The winner at the 9:30 was Jamie Calvey, a 32-year-old Nederland, Colorado-local who works at Boulder Ski Deals. We called up Calvey to ask him about his costume—which came complete with an $8 saucer he picked up just for the occasion. "I borrowed a buddy's jacket, and wore my own pants, hat, goggles, and snowblades, which we sell at the ski shop I work at for 10 bucks. The only thing I had to buy was the saucer," Calvey said. "I watched There's Something About McConkey this weekend to make sure I got his techniques and moves just right." As for the Shane segment in the movie? "I think it was really thoughtfully done. Shane was a great skier and a great friend to all of those guys—and you really got that through the movie." The Saucer Boy contest will be held at the all the other stops of the MSP tour.
