Whiskey Jacques Part Deux
Ski bums, football fans, music lovers, patrollers, cowboys, and even the well-informed tourist can all breathe a sigh of relief this winter when Sun Valley’s favorite bar, Whiskey Jacques, reopens its doors. Victim to an accidental fire last fall, it has been more than a year since the ski town of Ketchum has lost, what bar manager Kristin “Kitten” Derrig calls, “more than a bar to this town.” Whiskey’s is located on Main Street in downtown Ketchum and will reopen in December.
“People have told me how they met their wives at Whiskey’s or how they don’t even want to go out for a drink until Whiskey’s reopens” Derrig says. “Even our staff has waited around for the reopening. Instead of taking other full time jobs or moving out of town, they hung around waiting for their bar to reopen.” The 30-year-old-bar has become a piece of Sun Valley’s folklore. It’s a place where you can wear cowboy or ski boots, take in concerts from the likes of 2 Live Crew, Guttermouth, The Cobra Skulls, and Reckless Kelly, or watch locals embarrass themselves with weekly karaoke, play buck hunter, and drink for $1 on bi-weekly Dollar Nights.
Since the fire, which raised the building and the empty restaurant next door, owner Karin Martin and construction crews have been working quickly to get the place open again. The rebuild includes a second story, two decks, a bigger dance floor, a new food menu upstairs, plus audio and video throughout; all while maintaining its rustic Idaho feel with plenty of dark corners. In Sun Valley, skis are being dusted off and the race to opening day has begun, but the real countdown is to when Whiskey Jacques opens its doors and serves the first PBR. —Katie Matteson
