What’s behind your recent push to involve skiers and boarders in your efforts?

Our ski seasons are getting shorter, and our Earth is getting warmer. We all need snow, but right now, snow needs us. Nobody sees and feels these impacts more than skiers and boarders. There were numerous international competitions that were canceled last year due to poor ski conditions—these aren’t random occurrences. We should be asking ourselves, what would we do when there’s no more snow, and what are we prepared to do to ensure that this scenario never becomes a reality?

What are a few facts that every skier and boarder should know about the current climate crisis? 

First, we know that climate change is happening, and we know that we have the solutions and the technology to solve climate change—but we’re running out of time before the trends become irreversible. The scientific consensus is overwhelming, and we’re starting to see firsthand the impacts in our daily lives. For skiers, this means shorter ski seasons and bad conditions.

My message to all skiers and boarders, and everyone who loves winter sports, is that your voice absolutely counts, and that if you want to save winter—and the winter sports you love—you need to get organized with your friends and join groups like I Am Pro Snow, and then tell your elected officials that you care about this issue and that you will hold them accountable if they don’t take action. We need people to begin connecting the dots between the snow conditions and climate change—and to recognize that it’s not too late to act. 

How about some good news? Is there any?

In this year’s feature film from Warren Miller Entertainment, Ticket to Ride (2013/14), The Climate Reality Project has a segment starring world champion Ted Ligety that was filmed in Greenland. This segment is entirely carbon offset, and I’m so pleased at how companies like Warren Miller Entertainment and so many others are learning their carbon footprint and taking steps to reduce their emissions. These companies deserve our support for taking such an important stand. Many other countries are taking bold steps to reduce global-warming pollution. Likewise, we’re seeing major cities in the U.S. and many states—including our most populous, California—acting on their own because they’ve grown tired of inaction on the federal level. But for me, the best news is that all the solutions to address the climate crisis exist now and are at our disposal—we simply need to exert pressure on businesses and our elected leaders to make the right choices.

Tell us about the Climate Reality Project and the I Am Pro Snow initiative.

The Climate Reality Project is dedicated to spreading the truth about climate change and empowering our leaders to solve the climate crisis. We are a global movement more than five million strong and a grassroots network of nearly 6,000 Climate Leaders trained from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

I Am Pro Snow is a campaign to build alliances with the winter-sports community and educate people about the impacts of our changing climate. Our goal is to unite people who love and depend on snow for recreation, for business, and for their quality of life.

Many people feel helpless to address a problem of this magnitude. How do you respond to them?
