Whitefish, MT Feb. 20, 2004 (USST) — Kelly Vanderbeek of Canada tore out of the back of the pack in fog and tough visibility Friday at Big Mountain to overtake Bryna McCarty (Concord, VT) by .01 and win a Nor Am super G. McCarty, the super G points leader with three SGs remaining, skied third and finished in 1:32.68 while Vanderbeek, running 30th, came down in 1:32.67.

Katie Beardsley (Breckenridge, CO) was third at 1:33.24 as U.S. women took six of the top 10 places. Stacey Cook (Truckee, CA), second to McCarty in the super G points, was fourth. Thirty-one skiers finished and, with the rugged conditions, 35 were DNFs.

The women are scheduled for two super Gs and a pair of downhills at Big Mountain before two final super Gs Feb. 29-March 1 at Panorama resort in the Canadian Rockies. The schedule concludes March 9-12 with two giant slaloms and two slaloms at Collingwood, Ont. Being first or second in a Nor Am discipline means automatic World Cup start rights next season in that event; the overall title carries no such guarantee. McCarty is the defending Nor Am DH champion and used her opportunity to post two World Cup top-10s in downhill two weeks ago in Haus, Austria.
