Shoot-out in the Andes

Inside Skiing Magazine’s South American Photo Challenge.
posted: 01/23/2009

What happens when you pluck five photographers and five athletes from the clutches of August and throw them into a Chilean winter? And what do you get if you add an interrupted military exercise, drinking games with Hermann Maier’s groupies, a 5,000-foot couloir, and Chilean hotties dancing on table? Usually just sore legs and gonorrhea. Only we got dozens of coverworthy shots. The athlete-and-photographer teams were given six days to shoot for five categories: Creative Angle, Powder, Air, Big-Mountain, and Ski Culture. On the final night, each team presented a slideshow to an audience of 300 skiers, who voted to determine an overall winner. Here are the highlights.
