Here’s how Jeremy Transue tells the story: As a kid, whenever he wanted to take a break from skiing to eat, his mom made him make 10 turns first. The only problem was Transue didn’t like to turn. Instead, he’d point his skis straight down the hill and wiggle his butt 10 times. It didn’t take long for his family to start calling him Worm, a nickname that’s stuck with him ever since. We caught up with Worm recently at Copper Mountain, where he was training with the rest of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team for their upcoming World Cup races and the Vancouver Olympics. We asked him about his toenails, fat skis, and 30 other random things.
What kind of sunscreen do you use?
I’m not an avid sunscreen wearer.
How often do you ski the park?
Can you do a 360?
What do you think of tall Ts?
Definitely not my style.
Do you eat bacon?
Have you ever painted your toenails?
I went to a private ski academy, Green Mountain Valley School in Vermont, and we used to have cross-dressing day as kind of part of spirit week. So…[laughs]. I don’t know if I wanted to admit that.
How many toenails have you lost since you started skiing?
Actually, I’m lucky. I haven’t lost any.
How many Christmases’ have you missed because of your skiing schedule?
None yet, but this coming Christmas is going to be the first one. Mom’s not too happy.
What’s the widest pair of skis you own?
Probably my GS skis.
What are they underfoot?
I’m not entirely sure.
Have you ever surfed?
Do you have a girlfriend?
Does she ski?
Does she have fat skis?
Have you ever ski-bladed?
What did you think of that?
It was a long time ago—a lot of fun, though.
What were you for Halloween this year?
I was a baby.
Have you ever skied in Alaska?
Have you ever been heli-skiing
What’s the steepest pitch you’ve ever been on?
Probably the downhill at Bad Kleinkirchheim in Austria.
How steep is that?
I don’t know what the actual pitch is, but it’s steep.
What’s your favorite color?
Man, you answered that one right away.
[Laughs] It’s your favorite, you gotta know it.
When’s the last time you went to McDonalds?
A couple weeks ago.
Do you guys end up there a lot?
We try not to, but the Monopoly game always gets me.
What’s your favorite website?
I’m pretty addicted to Facebook right now.
I was going to ask about that. So that’s a yes on Facebook.
What about Twitter?
I have never tweeted.
Favorite ski movie?
I’m a Warren Miller fan—the old Warren Miller movies.
[Pauses for a while to think] There’s too many. Definitely a comedy, though.
What music do you listen to to get pumped up for a race?
It kind of depends on the day. I listen to a lot of Strangefolk.
Are you the best skier in your family?
Sorry, Josh, but yeah. [Editor’s Note: Josh is Jeremy’s brother]
