Trash stash, tickler or just plain ‘mo. Call it what you want, but the mustache is back and has made its way onto the U.S. Women’s Alpine Ski team. Yes, that’s right, the Women’s Alpine team. While Julia Mancuso, Lindsey Vonn, and Sarah Schleper battled it out this weekend on the GS and slalom courses at the Aspen Winternational, their coaches threw down in a competition of their own: who can grow the sickest stash.
The contenders? U.S. Women’s Alpine tech coaches Chris Knight, Trevor Wagner, Seth MacCadam, and Jeff Fergus. And it’s not just the Americans—the Canadian tech team is flowing their ‘mos this season too. But what started out as a style-choice-turned-friendly-wager among teammates has morphed into a gesture of goodwill in support of men’s cancers as a part of the global “Movember” movement. Launched in 2003, Movember rallies men worldwide to grow mustaches during the month of November with the goal of raising funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.
Leading the tech team’s mustache brigade is Chris Knight, women’s technical coach and the tech brains behind GS superstar Julia Mancuso, who led the Americans Saturday, placing 13th in the giant slalom won by Germany’s Kathrin Hoelzl. Died dark to offset his shaggy blonde locks and blue eyes, Knight’s stash is a groomed Tom Selleck and Ron Burgundy mashup: macho, mean, and pure porn. A coach on the U.S. Women’s Ski Team for the past eight years, Knight helped Mancuso snag the gold in the giant slalom at the 2006 Games in Torino. When not grooming his stash, Knight is busy preparing his girls for Vancouver. Straight off the slalom training hill in Aspen, Knight sat down with Skiing to give us the inside scoop on the ubiquitous mustache.
