Oskar Enander Gallery Opening in Portland

Oskar Enander Gallery Opening in Portland

Talk about a worldly: A Swedish photographer who lives in Switzerland is opening a gallery exhibition in Oregon with photos from Alaska. It's happening on October 15. If you can't make it to Portland, a new website will be showcasing his images.

Photos from Swedish photographer Oskar Enander have frequently graced the pages of our magazine. And on October 15, a collection of 30 of his still photos will grace the walls of a Portland, Oregon, gallery called The Cleaners, in the Ace Hotel. The stills, which will be shown alongside a short film, will chronicle four seasons spent in Haines, Alaska.

“Four winters in Haines is the central focus of the exhibition,” says Mark Smith, who created the  short film. “The narrative is purely visual, however the stories within the photographs and the film, reveal themselves when viewed as a whole.”

Each spring, Enander travels north with a group of friends to snowmobile and heli-ski in search of the perfect lines. “As a group we keep returning to Haines,” Smith says. “It’s not with the same primal needs of natural selection, yet there is this intractable motive that  somehow makes us build our lives around a seasonal trek to Haines.”

Smith is also working on creating a website that will showcase the photographs and film. We will keep you updated when that site is released. "Geography makes it difficult for Swedish and Swiss friends to attend, and as a result we're putting a site together so it will be easy to link to the photographs and film," says Smith.

Endander, who lives in Engelberg, Switzerland, will also be opening a permanent exhibition on December 5 with more than 100 prints at the Ski Lodge Engelberg.
