There have been a lot of firsts in the X Games. Every year, new inverts show up in slopestyle and records are broken in the half pipe. Winter X Games continues the trend with the addition of a European stop for the event. Eight different disciplines, including ski superpipe and slopestyle, will take place March 10-12, 2010 in Tignes, a resort in the northern French Alps. Participating athletes include Simon Dumont, Sarah Burke, Jacob Wester, and others.

Sarah Burke, one of the first invited to the Tignes event and winner of the gold in the 2009 Winter X Games superpipe, has already sent in a R.S.V.P. “The Winter X Games is one of the biggest events of the season for us,” Burke says. “I am looking forward to competing in Tignes in March.” Burke, among other prominent athletes receiving the first invites attended a press conference announcing the advent of the Tignes event last night.

Since 2002, Aspen has hosted every Winter X Games event. The selection of Tignes brings the games to the international realm. Sebastien Merignargues, Tignes resort manager, hopes the resort and the X Games will mutually benefit from the decision to go international. "Tignes has been chosen to host the Winter X Games Europe, which is the pinnacle for us,” Merignargues says. “Tignes has worked all summer with Snow Park Technology to provide amazing pipe and slopestyle courses as good as Aspen."

Traveling to France for Simon Dumont’s autograph seems unreasonable, but viewers will still have the opportunity to watch all of the events on ESPN.
