It all began on a Thursday night in 2006 when Jesse Lakes, a 28-year-old whitewater rafting guide, was watching the premier of a Matchstick Productions ski movie, Push. “The film was awesome and the sound track was off the hook,” he says, but later that night he was unable to locate any of the songs online. Lakes realized there was no site where you can find out the songs of artists featured in most ski movies. So he decided to launch one, and Skimoviemusic.com was born.
The website allows viewers to search for the soundtrack featured on your favorite ski movies. You can narrow down your search by company, year, athletes, and latest added. Ski Movie Music also offers interviews, and lists of the most popular soundtracks, songs, and albums. Once you've found what you’re looking for, download it directly from iTunes. “My favorite part of SMM is the top songs list,” Lakes says. “I think it’s a really cool way to learn about new music.”
Ski Movie Music is community generated and has doubled the number of songs listed since its launch in 2006. Lakes encourage his viewers to contact him with any information regarding ski movie soundtracks. If you know any that are not on the website, or see any errors, feel free to shoot him an email and share your information. Although SMM is the oldest and the biggest it spawned off a few siblings. Lakes also run a site for snowboarding soundtracks (ridertunes.com) and surf soundtracks (surfertunes.com).
