Ski movies come and go, but for Swift.Silent.Deep., touted as the first true historical documentation of ski bum culture in North America, the buzz is just beginning to build.
SSD, an acclaimed documentary on the Jackson Hole Air Force, opens its film tour with a premiere Friday night in New York City at The School of Visual Arts Theater. Made by independent filmmakers John Klackiewicz and Troy Beauchamp and nominated for Best Documentary at the 2009 X-Dance Film Festival, the movie sheds light on the shadowy, grudgingly famous group of skiers and their philosophy.
A more entertaining and inspiring group of characters would be hard to invent, and the movie sucks the audience in from beginning to end. Klackiewicz and Beauchamp use current and archived footage plus interviews to chronicle the influence the renegade group of athletes have had on ski culture as we know it today—and it’s more than you think.
The independent nature of the film, and a story that appeals not just to skiers but to anyone who has ever defied stereotypes, makes NYC a good place for the premiere. “The response to the film has been amazing from all across the country,” says Beauchamp. “We know New York City is full of rabid ski fanatics and we were stoked to have an opportunity to share the film with them.”
After the tour opens in NYC, the movie will be back to the more familiar ski-town stops, criss-crossing the country from California to the East Coast. After New York, scheduled November showings include Sandpoint, Idaho, Helena, Montana, and Boulder and Telluride, Colorado. A sneak preview last winter in Jackson met with resounding approval from the notoriously hard to please hometown crowd. In addition to the X-Dance honor, the movie was chosen as an official selection at the Newport Beach and Delray Beach Film Festivals.
