The Earliest Opening Date in History

You've likely heard the snowfall reports from around the country. Wyoming, Utah, Washington, California, and Colorado have all boasted early season dustings. But if you live in Colorado, the season officially starts tomorrow with Loveland opening at 9 a.m., beating out its rival Arapahoe Basin by a mere two days.

You’ve been waiting all summer to hear this: Ski season starts tomorrow. Every year, Colorado’s Loveland and Arapahoe Basin battle for the earliest opening date. This year, Loveland will squeak out a win by opening just two days before A-Basin, which plans to open for the season on Friday.

With an 18-inch base, covering 1,000 vertical feet, tomorrow skiers will flood Loveland’s Chair 1. The resort will be open for the season and running full operations until May. They’re expecting at least 1,000 people show up for the opening. In addition to skiing, there will be radio shows present, countdowns for the opening chair, ski company booths, and a scavenger hunt hosted by Orage. “There has been a huge buzz through social sites and media outlets that makes everyone excited for the season,” says Loveland’s John Sellars. “It is good press for the state of Colorado, for our resort, and for skiing.”

Arapahoe Basin will open one intermediate run, High Noon, and six features in the High Divide Park on Friday morning. “A-Basin congratulates Loveland Ski Area for being the first ski area to open in North America,” says A-Basin’s Leigh Hierholzer. “It’s nice to see our neighbor take the crown this year, but we will be back in the race for the 2010-2011 ski season.”

This is what happened at Loveland's opening day.
