See this dude? He's slogging up the 43-degree, 650-vertical-foot Headwaters Bowl at Moonlight Basin, Montana. It's an image you may never see again: This winter, the resort is installing a double chairlift up the same route, which leads (in just three minutes, eight times faster than the 25-minute grind) to a dozen of the West's steepest rock-banded couloirs, like 50-degree Three Forks and Whitewater, with its mandatory 10-foot air.
