Ski Art

Introducing four works of art - disguised as skis.
posted: 03/11/2008

Prior Doughboy
$999; priorskis.com
Part of an ink-wash series by Canadian ski and snowboard manufacturer Prior, the Doughboy's graphics were created by illustrator and pro snowboarder Olivier Roy. He says the art was inspired by the dark skies and deep powder of Whistler's backcountry. The ski is tailor-made for the softpack with wide tips and narrow, upturned tails.

Faction Wednesday
$599; factionskis.com
Australian street artist Mac10 usually paints on brick walls and sidewalks. In this case, his canvasses are top sheets for Faction skis, which have been handcrafted in the Austrian Alps since 2003. The Wednesday is 92 millimeters underfoot and built with freestyle and freeride mounting points, under-boot reinforcement, and semi-stiff flex.

Icelantic Pilgrim
$569; icelanticboards.com
Denver's boutique ski company Icelantic first recruited local artist Travis Parr in 2003. This year, it produced a line of four skis, including the Pilgrim, featuring acrylic-style fantasy graphics. The park-specifc skis are built short (under 170 centimeters) and fat (up to 90 millimeters underfoot). Buy them from select retailers or at the Icelantic gallery and shop in downtown Denver.

Wagner Custom Skis
Starting at $1,595; wagnerskis.com
Telluride's Pete Wagner lets you craft your own skis, from sidecut to graphics. This top sheet features Asian-garden-inspired imagery by Colorado design firm Moxie Sozo on a Japanese ash-wood veneer. Despite the delicate look, the skis are rugged wood-core laminates.
