Grenoble, France Dec. 19, 2001 (AP)--A 19-year-old British skier was convicted for plowing into a woman while hurtling ``like a madman'' down the slopes at an Alpine resort.
Adam Coles was given a six-month suspended term and fined $1,100 on Monday by a court in Albertville, in the French Alps. He was charged with ``unintentionally causing injury.''
Witnesses to the December 2000 incident at Tignes told the court Coles ``was behaving in an irresponsible and dangerous way'' and had ``descended the slope like a madman.''
Coles told the court he was an excellent skier and had tried to avoid the Russian woman. She suffered several fractures and a damaged spleen, doctors said.
``It is necessary to punish ... the fools who think they can do anything (on the slopes) and assume that insurance will pay,'' Prosecutor Rene Ternoy told the court.
