Competition: Authenticity Is Job 1

Fall Line

X-tremely weary of today's invented-for-TV neo-sports, Ford is banking on authenticity for the success of this summer's new Ford Explorer Sport Trac Challenge. The series features four-person teams of professional outfitters competing in climbing, whitewater kayaking, mountain biking and backcountry skiing. The series is an "earn-your-turn" format: Skiers skin up slopes before they descend, mountain bikers power themselves uphill before racing down, climbers run from pitch to pitch, and kayakers portage their boats between courses. The competitions will be held in remote backcountry areas, away from spectators, with the June finals in Hood River, Ore. Ford may be going retro, but it's not stupid. Fox Sports TV will cover the series, with winning team members driving away in new Ford Explorers. Track the results at ">
