Women’s Freeskiing Camps

Introducing four women-only ski camps geared for girls looking to up their game.
posted: 11/09/2009
Ingrid Backstrom: She skis like a woman (who skis like a man).

If you ski only so you can après and you’ve purchased new Moon Boots before updating your ski boots, then the following clinics and camps are probably not for you. However, if you’re the kind of girl who’s up at 6  a.m. to check the snow report and catch first chair, then we have a clinic just for you. Sign up for one of these four skills clinics at a resort near you this winter.

Squaw Valley, California, January 9-10
Women’s Resolution Freeskiing Camp
Start your season off by chasing ski film stars Ingrid Backstrom and Jessica Sobolowski around Squaw Valley. This camp is for intermediate to expert skiers, ages 13 and up. Skiers will be accompanied by their own videographer. “It’s always more fun and inspiring to ski with a group of girlfriends, and it brings out the best in everyone” Backstrom says. “We thought we would see if we could re-create that with a bunch of ripping women who all want to improve and have a good time in a positive, no-pressure environment.” [$359 with a Squaw pass, and $456 without (including tickets); squaw.com]

Grand Targhee, Wyoming, February 5-8
Perfect the Powder Catskiing Camp
Skiing deep powder can be tricky—your legs burn, your tips dive, and your goggles get packed with snow. Head up to Alta, Wyoming, for this four-day event to learn all the tricks of shredding pow. You’ll access backcountry stashes by cat-skiing and be guided by the North American Ski Training Center and Targhee’s expert staff. [grandtarghee.com]

Crested Butte, Colorado, February 13-14
Rippin Chix Steep Camp
You’re ready to take your skiing to the next level by jumping off cliffs and shredding double blacks. Join freeskiing legend Alison Gannett for two days of focused instruction in a small group (there’s no more than seven women per camp). You’ll receive a bag full of swag including products from sponsors like Head, Patagonia, and Pistil hats. Video and photography analysis included. [$350 with discounted lift tickets available; alisongannett.com]

Alta, Utah, January 21-25
Women’s Ski Camp
Alta is known for legendary terrain and bottomless powder. Learn how to tackle both at the Alta Lodge Women’s Ski Camp, which focuses on improving your ability and confidence. For women 18 and older, the camp includes lodging, meals, ski demos with advice on the best pick for you, and three days of coaching from Alf Engen Ski Schools. In your downtime, have a drink at the historic Sitzmark bar, take a hot tub, get an in-room massage. [$2,016 per person for double occupancy in a standard room or $2,582 for single occupancy in a standard room; Altalodge.com]
