Riding High

Riding High

Vibe
By Paul McMorris

Generations of Jay Peak skiers who had grown accustomed to the rigors of riding its aging aerial trams will appreciate this season's big news: The ski area is replacing its two rough-riding 1967 Von Roll tram cars with two 60-passenger Swoboda cars. Gone are the days of straining to see through foggy, ski-scratched plexiglass windows and being rattled at towers and bounced around the summit terminal dock. Instead, these sleek new creature-comfort¿equipped babies feature 18 flip-down seats, large scratch-free automotive-glass windows, a sound system, and shock-absorbing hydraulic bumpers and car hangers. Although ride time will be the same, it will probably feel a lot shorter. As for the retired cars, one will become the foyer to the tram bar, and its mate, a fast food stand.
